The Art of War

According to an old story, a lord of ancient China once asked his physician, a member of a family of healers, which of them was the most skilled in the art.

The physician, whose reputation was such that his name became synonymous with medical science in China, replied, “My eldest brother sees the spirit of sickness and removes it before it takes shape, so his name does not get out of the house.”

My elder brother cures sickness when it is still extremely minute, so his name does not get out of the neighborhood.”

As for me, I puncture veins, prescribe potions, and massage skin, so from time to time my name gets out and is heard among the lords.”

Kata

There is no end to practice of Kata. Eventhough a person has a high Dan, the act is never perfect. Practice is unlimited because Kata is for self improvement, mentally and physically. Yet, Kata has to be improved in different ways during each step as a beginner. When you have Kyu or Dan although you are performing the same Kata it will be different. Knowing different Kata does not mean you have a high Dan. In some foreign countries, they evaluate students by the number of Kata they know. It’s not how many Kata you know, but the substance of Kata you have acquired.

Sunday 8th Training

Very good and intense karate session witih Brad Candy this afternoon. 2h working kihon: kekomi mae geri chudan (front and back legs) studying distance and how to anticipate to an attacker by taking an offensive approach almost at the same time as the attacker attempts to strike.

Mae tsuki and yako suki paying attention to hip rotation (opening and closing the hip), shime, tsukite hikite. Full po…wer in every strike.

Transation exercises when moving from one stand to another keeping centre of gravity low and not raising head up & down, especially in shiko dachi.

Loads of neko-ashi dachi, shuto uke, uraken uchi and yako tsuki. Pad work, free weights and sets of 50 uninterrupted punches to the bag at full speed/power.

Geikisai Ichi and Ni, when exhausted, to finish off the session!

Teaching karate-do is nothing but pointing the student the doors to be opened. Only him or her can actually walk the path…

Well done, Brad!
